Diné (Navajo) Artist Profile: Azalia Begay

Azalea Begay
Azalia Begay comes naturally by her artistic talent. Her mother is an accomplished seamstress whose quilting work has been displayed in a Smithsonian Institution museum. Several silversmiths are sprinkled throughout the family, including Azalia's brother and grandfather. Her aunt is an award-winning photographer.
Azalia's beaded necklaces display the innate talent of the artist. Natural shell, turquoise and coral are blended and tied together in striking combinations.
Azalia is an indefatigable hostess. In the midst of a family gathering featuring her wonderful homemade tacos and basket ball on the big screen, I snapped some photos of her work as she prepares for yet another show.

Natural Mediterranean coral in a multi-strand necklace is set off with a Kingman turquoise nugget.

Chinese turquoise and abalone shell make a beautiful pairing in this chunky piece.

A detail shot shows how well the natural texture of the stone and shell marry.

Nik loves this piece made of spiny oyster shell with a turquoise nugget accent. It was a gift from her husband.

Turquoise nuggets in varying sizes combine with mother of pearl, spiny oyster shell and coral.  The detail of construction and bead selection are the loving work of the artist.

Collectors of Azalia's work become understandably attached to their possessions by strong emotional ties. Her necklaces rapidly become favorite pieces of wearable art.
Azalia would love to create a special piece for you. Contact me and I'll get you directly in touch with her.
